Traditional (oldies i believe by the way you asked it) songs are accompanied mostly by piano, percussion and strings, they do not use electronic instruments like keyboards and rarely use filters like autotune. Older music focused on romantic and mellow lyrics that would never offend anyone, for example. The rhythm and cadence is slower.

More modern music is comprised of mostly electronic instruments (keyboards, drums, electric guitars), some computer created sounds (like 8-bit sound effects) and rely a lot on filters and tuners. The lyrics are mostly focused around having a good time and not idealism – i am talking about mainstream pop music, not indie or rock.
